A photoresistor works by changing its resistance depending on the amount of light it is exposed to.  In the daytime when a lot of light hits it, it lessens resistance and conducts electricity well.  When no light hits it, it becomes increasingly resistant and conducts electricity poorly.  Solar power garden lights produce light through a solar-cell technology.

A garden light has four solar cells which produces 1.8 volts of electricity and different ranges of electric currents.  The range of electric currents varies according to how many solar cells there are and how much light they receive.  These solar cells are directly connected to a battery through diodes. 

A typical garden light runs on a standard AA Nicad battery.  It generates 1.2 volts and can accommodate 700 milliamp-hours.  It can fully charge itself during the daytime, except for cloudy days or during the winter season.  When night comes, the solar cells stop generating power and power is then transmitted from the solar cell and battery to the controller board.  The photoresistor then senses the light absence, and configures the three-transistor circuit to turn on the LED lights.  The LED produces an estimate of 1.23 volts taken from the battery; half the light created by a candle.  When fully charged, the LED can generate light for a good 15 hours.
